Venus is committed to setting flight to the voices of women and children with theatre for a lifetime...
Venus Theatre is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. Founded in 2000, Venus has given hundreds of women-and some very special
men - opportunities in the professional theatre world of Washington, DC. These opportunities have included: strong female roles for
actors, new and out-of-print (or little known) plays predominantly written by women, and the creation of an environment where it is safe
for women to explore dangerous territory. All of these things add up to a creative freedom for the women and men in the productions
as well as the public witnessing the plays.
Venus is one of the few DC theatre companies committed to bringing the voice of women into the DC theatre community. For many
actors and playwrights it is their first professional opportunity.

Nuts And Bolts...or...The Nitty Gritty...
We do professional guerilla theatre. That is to say that the work we do is predominately focused on the professionals:
actor/writer/director. It's about digging into the script and pushing the actors to do risk-taking work. It's also about
embracing designers and technicians willing to take risks in alternative spaces. So what we do is really based on
ensemble team work with seasoned professionals. Our outreach programs for youth continue to grow. This includes Baby
Play which is a Gymboree-type of class meeting theatre workshops for youth. Heartfriends plays are on the books for the
little ones as well. We are committed to embracing theatre in the spirit of equality for a lifetime.

Why Do We Do Feminist Theatre? Because we feel like women make up 50% of the population but are rarely represented honestly in the theatre arts. In staging challenging and risk-taking works, we have been able to expand the experience of the average theatre goer and embrace women dealing with very similar stories as those we stage, in their own lives. The women in our audience tend to become unified and sometimes even healed and men tend to have a greater understanding of what the world looks like through female eyes. So, everyone wins!
The Space to express... In June of 2006 Venus Theatre signed a lease agreement for a storefront at 21 C Street in Laurel, MD. Now known as the Venus Theatre Play Shack it is our creative space. The place where do works for children and develop works for adults.
