| Venus Theatre will host two, two week long GirlCamps this summer! The objective of GirlCamp is to facilitate positive self-love and expression in young girls. It's a direct counter to the many unhealthy messages young girls must process daily. Session One: The first camp will run from July 9th through the 20th. Session Two: The second camp will run August 6th through the 17th. Each camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm at the Venus Theatre Play Shack. Tuition is $400.00 for each 65 hour camp. GirlCamp is for young women from preadolescence into early adolescence. The first week of camp will be full of theatrical exploration, costume and prop play. Week two will end with a Friday performance as determined by the participants. All proceeds from performance will be allocated as participants decide. Spotlighting Positive Self-Image in Young Women For a Lifetime! Venus theatre is a 501c3 nonprofit theatre company committed to setting flight to the voices of women and children with theatre for a lifetime. Venus incorporated in 2000 and began launching fully staged productions in Washington, DC. Since that time, Venus Theatre has received two Curve Magazine Play of the Year Awards ("Ugly Ducklings" by Carolyn Gage, and "Cigarettes and Moby Dick" by Migdalia Cruz). "Ugly Ducklings" also received a nomination for the prestigious American Theatre Critics Award. In addition, Venus was honored by the Helen Hayes American Express Award. In June 2006 Venus found a home in Laurel, MD and began launching her Educational Arm. BabyPlay and GirlCamp are just two ways Venus Theatre is reaching out into the community to build stronger bonds among its citizens of all ages. Theatre is the perfect vehicle to: learn about virtually forgotten history in the way of dramaturgical research, celebrate storytelling, embrace individual expression, explore connecting with a group, and practice daily healthy self-esteem. Classes are led by Venus Founder and Artistic Director Deborah Lou Randall. Randall was a top Gymboree instructor in the DC/NYC franchise between 1999 and 2001. Randall's classes were at max capacity for 120 students each week. For the past four years Randall has worked as a theatre educator with the Helen Hayes Legacy Project. She's visited approximately 20 DC Public Schools and brought her theatre workshop to each of them. Director John Vreeke referred to Randall as a Master Teacher for the project. In 2006 Randall's play "Molly Daughter" was published in an anthology entitled "Anthracite!" by the University of Scranton Press and distributed by the Chicago University Press. In addition to "Molly Daughter", Randall also wrote and performed "Til It Hurts" and "The Voice Inside the Vessel" as well as performing the solo works "How She Played the Game" by Cynthia Cooper and "All She Cares About Is The Yankees" by John Ford Noonan. Randall has directed more than 50 works over the past 20 years and believes deeply that the tools of theatre can help young people find their footing for life. In addition to educational programming, Venus continues her monthly wRighting Women Reading Series. Playwrights from all over the country and Canada have had the opportunity to have their scripts explored at Venus. Not only has this program given countless playwrights opportunities, but it has also given hundreds of actors new roles to explore. As Venus continues to execute her newly developed 10 year business plan, the educational and work-shopping elements will remain at the core of the foundation of the company. From that center, Venus will begin to mount three different styles of plays year round: 1. Heartfriends Musicals for young audiences. 2. Historical works by/for/about women that may be out-of-print. 3. Contemporary cutting-edge feminist works. Cultivating and celebrating the arts with our children makes for a healthy heart in the world at large! |
